What Plum Gut Is
Plum Gut is the narrow gap between Orient Point and Plum Island where Long Island Sound empties into Gardiners Bay. Enormous volumes of water move through it twice a day, and on a running tide the surface is visibly moving.
Striped bass and big bluefish use that. They sit on the down current side and let the water deliver bait to them. Get the stage wrong and the sounder fills with fish that have no interest in what you are offering. Get it right and the same piece of bottom produces on drift after drift.
Which means the departure time follows the tide for your specific date. Some weeks that is before sunrise. Some weeks it is mid morning. Any operation that gives you a fixed 6 a.m. departure regardless of the date is not fishing the water, it is running a schedule. The Slot Limit Nobody Warns You About
This is the conversation that disappoints anglers who have not fished New York recently. Striped bass in marine waters carry a one fish limit and a narrow slot: keep one between 28 and 31 inches, release everything outside it. A forty inch fish goes back. So does a twenty five inch fish. Inline circle hooks are required when fishing bait.
So a good bass day out there is mostly catch and release, and the fish you remember is usually one you put back. Better to know that before you book than at the rail.

North and west of it is the Long Island Sound region. South and east is the New York Bight region. The two have different fall season dates and different bag limits. Same boat, same afternoon, two rule sets depending on which side of the line the bait lands. A captain who works that water knows exactly where the line sits.
What a Full Day Involves
Full day trips out to Plum Gut and Block Island Sound run roughly eight to ten hours, which gives you the time to fish several spots and follow the bite rather than settling for the first mark. It is a genuine day out and it is colder, windier, and wetter than the forecast on your phone suggests. Bring a windbreaker in July.
Greenport is the shorter run to the Gut. A Shelter Island base sits between both forks, so either pickup works without burning daylight in transit.
The Best Month
October. Bass migration is on, blackfish season opens, and the summer traffic has gone home. Ask for it early, because the people who fish there every year already have.
